After fighting people for a treadmill in Marino January after January, I’ve come to realize that seemingly the entire Northeastern population has the same New Years Resolution: to get fit & healthy. Here are some tips to help make that resolution a success.

  1. Baby Steps
In order to be successful you really need to start your goal in baby steps. So maybe you haven’t stepped foot in the gym all semester, and want to try it again this Spring. Unless you’re Wonder Woman, you’re not just going to hop on a treadmill and run 10 miles. Take it easy the first week, maybe aiming for 25 minutes of cardio, weights (whatever), and increasing the time or intensity the next week. That way, you won’t feel like a failure and give up if you can’t stay on the elliptical for 75 minutes the first day.
  2. Health Food!?
Another small step you could start with on your road to becoming a health freak could be to aim to make a healthy meal once a day (or even once a week). There are several great sites for healthy, yet delicious foods.
Check out this AMAZING “Healthy” cookie dough recipe (from Pinterest-obviously)!
Or search these sites for great, healthy meals:

  3. Finding what you like
Instead of boring yourself on the elliptical everyday, mix it up and try new things. Rent a bike and ride around Boston with friends, go to a local gym and try Kickboxing or Hip Hop Yoga. Check out group fitness classes, or sign up for a dance class. Working out isn’t just going to the gym, it’s finding something you love that gets you moving!
  4. Making it social
Bring sisterly bonding to the gym. Grab a phi and head to the group fitness classes together, or join in on the AEPhi running/walking club and enjoy a social atmosphere while still working out- I promise its much more fun!
  5. Treat yourself
Just because you’re being healthy doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself. Most fitness & health experts recommend that you treat yourself at least once a week. So grab that chocolate or some chips and enjoy :) (Seriously, try the cookie dough…)
  6. Music, Music, Music!!
I always find that music helps make the workout go by much faster! Update your iPod with some new songs to rock your workout.
There are also several websites that have premade workout mixes for you to synch your workout to.

Happy New Year!!!
